What a feeling to write an almost end-of-year recap. One of the highlights of 2024 has been attending numerous conferences! In the senior living industry, this year has been marked by incredible advancements and meaningful connections. With so much happening, here’s a quick breakdown of two key takeaways:

People. There are many wonderful people looking for ways to improve the industry! Many leaders are focused on more purposeful engagement — both with residents and within their teams. At the same time, there’s an emphasis on more efficiency in processes and leveraging data to improve community care and operations.

Somehow, on top of all the hard work, you all find time to express excitement and gratitude. I appreciate those who went out of their way to say ‘hello’ to new and familiar faces, started industry book clubs, and participated in some… interesting airport selfies.

Technology. Smart, integrated platforms are a top priority across the industry. Recently, most of the questions I get on conference floors are ‘Who do you integrate with?’ — which is exciting to share. As great as (apologies for the generic buzzword) AI can be, there needs to be a consistent process in place for a new technology to enhance. It can be so helpful to ask others how they have solved certain friction points and share your successes with others.

Here are a few standout moments from this year’s conference season!…🥁 drum roll

At SMASH, our own Mikah Meyer planned a “90s hip hop” suite for Cocktail Connections and it sure brought out the party animals of senior living. It was a great reminder of the vibrant, people-centered culture that exists in this industry. Our team also visited Zac Bagans’ The Haunted Museum which is my personal favorite in Las Vegas.

At TALA, everyone seemed to take the theme seriously and made the couple of days the biggest party in the jungle. I also learned how easy it is to accidentally order way too much food in Texas.

At LeadingAge, I reconnected with Amy (shoutout!), a friend I met at Interface, and had the opportunity to expand my network with incredible industry professionals.

If you have an initiative for next year, the best time to start preparing is now. If that initiative involves the move-in process feel free to reach out. Here’s to another great year — 2025!

Cheers,

Shane
